In 1990 the invention of the World Wide Web by Tim Berners-Lee changed the way information was acquired. The internet became more popular and the perspective of how the individual conceived their surroundings was transformed.1

The perception of time was interpreted according to countless resources and approaches because one new window was opened to acquire updated information according to people’s needs.1

This unstoppable phenomenon reshaped the world and as a result, many people became engaged in this revolutionary method of finding and acquiring information. Individuals were enjoying enormous worldwide accessibility that it was characterized by a strong tendency to keep connected with others from remote places without exerting any extraordinary effort.1

Almost simultaneously with the arrival of the internet, social media comes up as one of the most important ways to be connected and communicated.1 Social media appeared as an answer to people’s needs to be part of a new social perspective where individuals can freely express their emotions in real-time.1 However, being engaged on these compelling social networking sites could be influencing negatively in the health worker’s behavior due to social comparison, depression, anxiety, bullying, and social isolation, affecting their emotional status and job performance.1-5

In an effort to reduce the emotional consequences of social networking usage in the healthcare workers of a Medical Center and improve their job performance, this investigation has been designed. The goal of this research is the recognition of the relationship between social networking sites usage, emotional health, and job performance.

The implementation of an educational program based on innovative strategies such as the mindfulness initiative and emotional intelligence focusing on improving the ability of health workers to be aware of their current day, developing the ability to overcome difficult situations being resilient putting into practice the self-control and self-determination.1-5

Using a sample of fifteen health workers were conducted two models of surveys to measure the level of knowledge about social networking usage consequences before and after the educational sessions. Additionally a survey to know the emotional impact of social networking usage on health workers was carried out.

Results showed that there is a relationship between social networking sites usage, emotional health, and job performance. Medical Center health employees recognized that they are being affected by social networking usage consequences and at the extent they can put into practice the given recommendations based on mindfulness initiative and emotional intelligence they will have emotional stability, healthy interpersonal relationships, better job performance, and enhanced worksite environment, but above all, they will have a better life.
